Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best (or worst) Donna screech

There have been many great questions posted on this forum, many garnering well thought out and provoking responses. This may not be one of them. As I was listening to the PNE '73 show (a fantastic audience recording for the time of a really good show - particularly "Birdsong"), I was in the middle of really good, spacey "Playin'" when Donna came out of nowhere with her patented high pitched, buzz killin, baby scaring, spine curling howl. I nearly drove off the road. Then, just when I had almost forgotten the incident and was back into the incredibly deep groove the band was in during the same "Playin'", she went and did it again. Damn near blacked out with the shock. Anyone else have particular favorites along these lines? I would actually be tempted to stream some responses to see which one will actually cause my spleen to rupture. True, I am a masochist, but I figured this may be a road less often travelled by most (maybe for good reason)

OK, it seems that most of you have taken my question in the way it was intended....humor. This forum is incredible, but at times it does tend to get a little too serious. I was only attempting to lighten things up a bit, which most of you got. Seriously, there are moments when I don't find Donna performances painful, but to say that saying we don't like her is the same as saying that we should trash the entire Donna era is something I cannot agree with. That time for the band was unlike any other and filled with more huge shows than almost any other. The sheer genious of Jerry and Co. more than make up for what Donna at times would attempt to do (and to quote my friends from the South.."Bless her heart"). As much as I hate to admit it, Donna was part of the band during what many have called their creative peak. Agree with that or not, she was there and has to be dealt with. For those who took personal offense at this, I apologize; for those who took it like it was meant, I am still looking for that spleen buster.

No need to apologize, everyone's opinion is as valid as the next. And to give Donna proper credit, as said before, she was tremendous at harmonizing with Bobby and really filled out the sound of many tunes. I also recall the Mosque show from 77 in particular as one where I feel she had some really good moments. I truly love and respect any member of the band (including musicians, crew, significant others, etc.) who had even the smallest part in creating something so incredible (yes, this includes Donna...if only she would have stuck to the harmonies)

you are definitely right...back in the day...the many many many shows i went to...the roar of the crowd when she came out...who would have thunk (and i thunk and couldn't think of anything better) that we'd be criticing (not criticizing) 30 years later...

Worst - any Playing of the Band from 72, they all rocked and that screech ruins them

Best - I actually really liked her at the end of Ramble on Rose on the Closing of Winterland

The screech is the highlight! When she gets it rights it provides a great seque into the wig-out.

The worst ever is the scarlet begonias from 5/19/74. at the end she just belts out some screechs that i know made everybody look at each other and say, "can we kill her mike?"

Beware of your post, some may accidentally insert a comma in the wrong place which would alter the meaning entirely (especially if there were alot of guys name "Mike" at that show).

I'll bite,
i think Donna lets out a bloodcurdling scream in PIB-12/31/78 Best & worst at the same time.
(nice thread). How about one on Bobby's horsescreams in Estimated Prophet? I always cringed on those!

also on the 8/27/72 Sing me back home, she, well, gets my attention with some +DBharmony - actually, i liked that, so it could be in the best dept.
If Pigpen could have cut the juice, where would we be without Donna? An old snarling Pen telling us to go home and F someone? or Donna singing Sunrise-tough call!

As bad as the Playing screams are I can deal with them because they're over fairly quickly and because when it comes time for the big payoff or climax I can identify with wanting to explode myself. Of course it's still crazy and bizarre. What I absolutely CAN NOT deal with is what she does to Scarlet. She just drones on and on and on. And it's especially disturbing when you're altered. Also, I'm a bigger fan of the shorter tighter earlier stand alone version except for the whatever it is she's doing.

A funny one is the Shakedown from 11-24-78 " YOW!" What's that about?

come on people...she wouldn't have been in the band if they didn't think she had attributes...they weren't tryin to change the world....just play music....if you don't like it then wipe out 72-79 and see what that leaves you...maybe we should judge your job performance on a day to day basis...don't try to make the dead something they weren't....they were a group of people playing instruments for our enjoyment...and theirs too

yeah..what instrument did she play ??? sorry but she was useless....

she sucked and it took them all those years for the acid to wear off and then jerry finally saw the light!!!!

i noticed all those times in the 80's that she guest appeared at shows....:-0 she was awesome!!!!

try 9-11-73 for a whale of a good time.... :)~

"or maybe she got goosed?"

yer getting warm -lol. Yeah, every few weeks poor Donna get's flamed here. I've alway's connected Scarlet Begonias with Donna as a plus. Harmonys yes, lead singing? not much there. Btw, any dates on her being a guest singer after her & Keith left the band? I did'nt know that, other than her singing with the Post 95 Dead & Phil Lesh

sorry but i never got her and never will ..she flat out kills any song she tries to sing on ...sorry, that's how i feel and hear it !!! :0

I'm with you 100% This is not a personal slam to hurt anyones feelings but it's my opinion. I will go so far as to say I don't think she was good at all on anything. All this talk about not being able to hear on stage and how great she was because she sang on an Elvis song is bullshit to my ears. There are some Jerry studio albums and solo shows where she is TOLERABLE at best but not good. Sorry but I think there are hundreds of thousands of people who sing in their showers that are at least as good probably better.

she improved and also sang well in a lot of 76 shows-imo, and Bobby also, then he de-improved a little-well, his song selection.
I should check out some Heart of Gold Band, never have. Is she any good in HGB?
She seems a REAL nice and warm person in the Closing of Winterland Interviews sitting with Billy. Or is that the 78 NYS DVD-? i mix 'em up. But what do i know? i love her (sigh)

Great video of that version--and Donna's "Yow!" seems more in context. More off the cuff.

may I admit to a crush on Donna as a 14 year old watching The Dead Movie?
